People keep looking for simple ways to getting that sleek, slim body they have been dreaming about. In their quest fulfill this dream, they have tried various means; going to the gym, taking food supplements, drugs and also fasting to which some have proved unsafe and unhealthy for their bodies. However, modern doctors have introduced a simple vegetative way of loosing weight without going through hardcore exercises and stress. This method is known as keto diet.

Keto diet, which was used primarily to treat epilepsy, has been proven by nutritionists to promote weight loss. This is an eating plan that consist of eighty percent of fat and little to no carbohydrates. According to research, the diet, which consist of fish, meat, eggs, dairy, oils and green vegetables, helps to boost the immune system. The diet works by changing the way the body turns food into energy by cutting off carbohydrate in the system which puts the body in a state called ketosis where fat is released from cells and turned into ketones which serves as the second energy supply for the body.

This state can also be achieved when the diet is eaten indefinitely and has the same benefits derived from fasting.

The ketosis experienced on a ketogenic diet is often called nutritional ketosis. Studies have demonstrated that ketosis can be maintained for years, e.g. in children treated with a ketogenic diet for epilepsy, and for at least a year or two when treating obesity or type 2 diabetes.

It may even be possible to stay on a ketogenic diet indefinitely. While it may be quite challenging for most people to do it consistently for years, there is no obvious or proven upper limit for how long nutritional ketosis can be maintained.

The diet may work well for people who want to loose weight, have a calmer stomach, control their appetite, increase physical endurance and also increase their mental performance but may have adverse effects on people with diabetes, high blood pressure and breastfeeding mothers.

The most important thing for reaching ketosis is to avoid eating too much carbohydrate filled foods like rice, banana, potatoes, beer, bread and the like. The food should primarily be high in fat, and only moderately high in protein, as excess protein can be converted to blood sugar in the body. Avoid low-fat diet products. A rough guideline is about 5% energy from carbohydrates, 15-25% from protein, and around 75% from fat.

You’ll probably need to keep carbohydrate intake under 50 grams per day of net carbs, ideally below 20 grams. The fewer carbs, the more effective it appears to be for reaching ketosis, losing weight or reversing type 2 diabetes.

If you are on the diet, you can take drinks like water, coffee, tea (without sugar or sweeteners) ,with probably a small amount of milk, and wine.
